Toshiba CEVO TVs: Personal TV face recognition Technology in focus

One of the exciting features on board Toshiba's YL and WL Series CEVO televisions is the ingenious face recognition technology built-in, which adds an extra dimension to the already impressive Personal TV service. Let's find out more about what it is and how the Toshiba CEVO television technology works.

Technology is about cutting edge components, but it's also about your relationship with the finished product, and it doesn't get more personal than your relationship with your TV.

Let's get Personal
That's where Personal TV comes in. It's a feature on board an increasing number of Toshiba HD TVs that recognises everyone is different, and we all have different favourite programmes, different ideal volume settings and even different preferred contrast and brightness settings to the rest of the family. That's what Personal TV is all about: letting you save your favoured settings to your very own viewing profile.

Press the right buttons
Watching TV is a family affair, so up to four different people can save their settings to a specific button on the remote control. Sadly you'll still have to face the age-old battle for the remote itself, but once you do, getting the picture settings and channel preferences exactly how you want them is a simple matter of pressing a button.

The next step
Personal TV is a great service, then, but the upcoming CEVO-based YL and WL Series TVs – along with the UL Series recently launched – take things a step further. These high-spec LED TVs have webcams built in, which are able to recognise your face automatically and apply your favourite settings without you even having to go as far as pressing a button on the remote control.

How it works
The practicalities of using the system are simpler than your might think, too. It involves an extra feature in the Personal TV setup page that involves you sitting in front of the built-in camera and letting it map the features of your face. This then gets saved together with your profile, and when you switch your TV on the camera will check to see if the person facing it matches the facial features of any of the saved profiles, and if so will apply their settings automatically.

The Personal TV function with face recognition will be on board the exciting new Toshiba YL Series and WL Series sets, which are set to go on sale in the near future. In the meantime, though, you can also check it out on the UL Series, which you can find out more about at Toshiba.
