The Portégé R700 is an ultra-skinny laptop that holds a secret. Inside that eye-wideningly thin chassis is something very special. New Airflow Cooling Technology, co-developed by Intel, means this is one of the most efficient portable PCs ever made. Read on, and we’ll school you in the science of this technology.
Smart cooling
The Portégé R700’s isn’t just a powerful and slim laptop. On the inside, its chassis is crafted from light but strong magnesium alloy. It’s stronger than plastic, yet thinner and lighter too. The chassis features new Airflow Cooling Technology, co-developed by Intel and Toshiba to keep it cooler than most laptops by channelling air in a smarter way.
Airflow Cooling Technology works in partnership with a newly designed motherboard, which positions the Portégé R700’s heat-generating components in a single location inside the laptop, rather than spreading them out.
In other laptops, the processor, graphics chips and other toasty components are spread across the computer’s internal space. That makes them tricky to cool, and the laptop ends up running hot. In the R700 however, they’re all kept together where a fan can easily push air over them to stop heat building up.
It’s a different approach to most laptops, which push heat out after it’s generated. This approach means there’s less noise from the Portégé R700’s fan, and the surface temperature of the laptop remains cool too, even when you’re pushing it hard with multimedia applications or games.
Airflow benefits
Picking a Portégé R700 doesn’t just mean you’ll get a cooler laptop with a quieter fan. Airflow Cooling Technology also helps extend battery life, letting the Portégé R700 squeeze up to 9 hours from a single charge using a six-cell battery, or a whopping 14 hours with a nine-cell power pack (you’ll need to buy that separately).
By improving the R700’s cooling abilities, Toshiba also makes it possible for ultra-portable laptops to use full-power processors, rather than their less powerful mobile counterparts. Inside you’ll find Intel’s newest Core i3, Core i5 or Core i7 chip, with all the latest technology to tear through apps and software at blistering speed.
What’s more, the magnesium alloy shell keeps everything strong and sturdy. Underneath the Portégé R700’s palm rests, there’s a new honeycomb structure, giving the laptop supreme rigidity and strength, despite being lightweight and thin.
Waif-like weigh in
Airflow cooling Technology helps keep the Portégé R700 amazingly light. The whole package is a stunning 1.3Kg with a waistline starting from just 16.8mm at its thinnest point, and just 25.7mm at its thickest.
