So which LCD TV has the best sound?

Toshiba has partnered up with Dolby who are one of the leading brands in audio enhancement and a household name. Dolby Volume is a clever processing chip that is connected to the MetaBrain on several REGZA models which monitors sound levels on channels and will keep the sound constant to your preferred setting.

For example you are watching an episode of Sopranos on E4 – it is mainly the sound of two people secretly discussing who they are going to bump off next when suddenly it reaches an ad break. Suddenly the E4 voiceover man is bellowing out about the next series of Skins – before your partner can start complaining about the noise you are reaching for the remote control to turn the volume down. You think it’s job done and then suddenly Sopranos is back on and you can’t hear what is being said, again your partner is moaning and you are reaching back for the remote to turn it up again.

Noise is used by advertisers to attract your attention to their advert. Often the lower budget the channel the lower budget the production so sound levels can be all over the place.

Dolby Volume will prevent the need to keep grabbing the remote. It cleverly reads ahead in the sound track and can detect a sudden change of audio pitch and realises that it needs to adjust the volume either up or down.

Dolby Volume also works when changing the channel. If you watch BBC1 and 2 for example they are recorded at notoriously low volumes which is fine when you are watching them as you set the volume for your preferred levels then suddenly you decide that you want to see what’s on some of the other Freeview channels so you have a browse. I’ve often made the mistake of having a browse of the channels after Match of the Day amazed at what you can find on the likes of Virgin after 11pm. Always a difficult one to explain when you skulk off to bed afterwards after waking the whole house. Dolby Volume will prevent this happening.

Also if you’ve ever watched a movie on a DVD player and then suddenly thought you would catch the news before bed, again there seems a little explosion of sound as you switch between sources on your TV. Dolby Volume will prevent this from happening as well.

So Dolby Volume will prevent you constantly changing the volume on the remote control regardless of what you watch and is clever enough to detect if what you are watching is about to suddenly get very loud, for example an explosion after a long quite scene would not be muffled out.

Toshiba is first to market with Dolby Volume with the 100Hz XV Range, 200Hz ZV range and the LED 200Hz SV range.

If only they produced Dolby Volume on car stereos then the traffic announcements from the local radio stations wouldn’t always make me jump out of my seat when listening to Chris Moyles in the morning!

So in summary Dolby Volume will save your marriage as you never have to apologise for setting the wrong volume when watching TV, even if it was her who had the remote control last!
