What is DivX, and why is it in my DVD Player?

DivX Inc is a well known brand, that was formally known as DivXNetworks. DivX Inc created a play back format called DivX which used, what’s known as a codec called, ‘DivX Codec’ funnily enough.

The codec, in laymen’s terms, is basically a file within the player (in this case the DVD Player), which allows it to play a certain format of a video. For example, if you wanted to play an MPEG video file, you would need a type of MPEG Codec, and so on. Without this codec you won’t get much joy when pressing play when trying to watch a DivX video.

DivX uses what’s known as ‘Lossy MPEG-4 Compression’ which sounds a little technical. In other words it is a video compression software which enables high quality video to be compressed into very small files then downloaded onto CD or DVD and played back with very little loss of quality.

Over the last 4-5 years DivX has become such a widely used video format on the internet that most DVD players now have the ability to play back this video in case you wanted to take a video off your computer and play it on your DVD Player.

Most laptop DVD burners now convert and burn your films, onto a DVD disc, in the default format of DivX, so it only makes sense that you can play it on your home DVD Player.
